Da Vinci Surgical System

Rockford Health System, the region’s leader in surgery, is proud to be home to the da Vinci Surgical System, the most advanced technology available in minimally-invasive robotic surgery.

Da Vinci allows surgeries to be performed through very small incisions, resulting in:

  •  Less post-operative pain and discomfort;
  • Less scarring and faster recovery;
  • Minimized blood loss;
  •  Reduced risk of infection;
  •  Shorter hospital stay;
  •  Faster return to normal daily activities
  •  Better clinical outcomes, in many cases; and
  •  The three-dimensional precision and accuracy of traditional surgery.

The da Vinci Surgical System is powered by state-of-the-art robotic technology that allows the surgeon’s hand movements to be translated into precise movements of small instruments within the operating area. Da Vinci cannot be programmed on its own and requires that every surgical movement be performed with direct input from the surgeon.

The system has been used in thousands of surgical procedures around the world and nearly 700 da Vinci systems are in place at leading medical centers in the U.S.  Patients in the Rock River Valley previously had to go to Chicago or Madison to access medical centers with da Vinci technology.

Da Vinci and Urology Procedures

The da Vinci system is used to treat prostate cancer and in a number of other urological procedures at Rockford Memorial Hospital. Our team of da Vinci surgeons from Rockford Urological Associates (RUA)  includes Mark Cormier, M.D.,  and Michael Fumo, M.D.  Dr. Fumo leads the da Vinci program. He has been the primary surgeon on more than 750 da Vinci procedures and has assisted on an additional 1,000 cases in his career.
