Rockford
Health System is home to the only
comprehensive genetics program in the
region. The genetics program at Rockford
Health system consists of the Department
of Medical Genetics and the Cytogenetics
Laboratory. These departments provide
clinical and laboratory based genetics
services to the entire northern Illinois
and southern Wisconsin region.
The Department of Medical Genetics
consists of a medical geneticist who is
board certified in clinical,
biochemical, and molecular genetics and
three board-certified genetic
counselors. The Medical Genetics team is
available for evaluation, management,
treatment, and genetic counseling for
individuals with a family history of a
genetic condition, individuals with a
family history of cancer, pregnant
individuals and their partners, and
children or adults with a genetic
condition or suspected genetic
condition.
The Cytogenetics Laboratory is a CLIA
and CAP approved laboratory and consists
of a board certified cytogeneticist and
several clinical laboratory specialists
in cytogenetics. The laboratory performs
specialized genetic studies, including
chromosome analysis and fluorescent in
situ hybridization studies.
