Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Our Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (or NICU), the only state-designated NICU in the northern Illinois region, provides care for critically ill or injured newborns from throughout a 15-county region. The neonatologists and the nursing staff of the NICU are highly specialized and extensively trained in the care of premature infants. Neonatologists are in the NICU 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to provide immediate care for ill newborns.

A specially-trained transport team is also ready 24 hours a day to transfer infants born at 11 hospitals throughout the region to our NICU. The family-centered NICU provides extraordinary support to parents, including genetic counselors, educators, social workers and chaplains who understand the challenges and emotions involved with these special babies.

The Neonatal Follow-Up Clinic provides care to NICU graduates during the first three years of life. Periodic evaluations of growth and development are offered, and guidance is given in the areas of feeding, child care, premie growth and development, and developmental stimulation. Referrals are made to early intervention service providers, pediatric specialty physicians and family support programs.

The clinic is staffed by registered dietitians, developmental therapists and speech pathologists who maintain Illinois early intervention credentials.
