Quality Care in Pediatrics

What do our accreditations mean?

Illinois is one of only a few states that have hospital recognition programs for pediatric critical care.  Statistics show that hospitals accredited as part of formal recognition programs have lower complication and death rates.

Rockford Memorial Hospital maintains accreditation from the Illinois Department of Public Health as a designated Pediatric Critical Care Center (PCCC) and Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics.  We have been designated as a PCCC since 2005.  In addition to meeting a rigorous set of written criteria, accreditation is granted only after an on-site survey conducted by Public Health officials and experts from other children’s hospitals throughout the country.

During our most recent survey in May 2009, surveyor comments included the following observations about the strengths of our program:

  • Pre-hospital and emergency preparedness systems are well organized and demonstrate “best practices”
  • Excellence of Child Life Program
  • Implementation of an electronic medical record
  • Access to pharmacists and nutritionists specializing in pediatrics
