Quality Care
in Pediatrics
Rockford Memorial
Hospital is committed to
providing the best care to children and
families. We are always measuring how we
are doing on key quality and safety
measures. Measuring how we are doing
helps us to improve the care we provide.
·
National PICU Measures
Rockford Memorial Hospital
takes part in a pediatric critical care
database called Virtual PICU Systems
(VPS). There are 117 PICU in the VPS
database. We all collect the same type
of data and report that data to VPS. We
are able to compare how we are doing and
make improvements on the care we
provide. The “VPS reference group” in
the graphs below refers to all the
PICU’s in the VPS database.

Preventing Hospital-Acquired Infections
Ventilator-Associated
Pneumonia (VAP)
Ventilator-associated pneumonia is a
serious illness of the lungs that can be
caused when germs (bacteria) enter the
lungs through ventilator equipment. A
ventilator is used to help very ill
children breath. Good hand-washing,
cleaning of equipment, limiting
ventilator use, good mouth cleaning and
separating patients who have contagious
germs can all help prevent VAP.
Rockford
Memorial
Hospital
is always working to reduce the number
of VAP.

Central-Line Associated Bloodstream
Infection (CLABSI)
A central line is a
tube that is placed in a large vein in
the neck, chest or arm to quickly
deliver fluid, blood or medication that
the patient needs. An infection can
occur when germs (bacteria) travel down
the central line and enter the
bloodstream.
Central line
bloodstream infections can be very
dangerous and are believed to be the
cause of nearly a third of all
infection-related deaths in U.S. hospitals today. Rockford Memorial Hospital
is always working to reduce the number
of central line infections.

Chronic Disease Management
Asthma
Asthma is the most common long-term
disease of children; affecting 7-10% of
children in the U.S. today.
Children are hospitalized for asthma
more often than any other childhood
disease. There is no cure for asthma,
but it can be controlled and managed. We
track our asthma care by looking at how
well we perform on three measures that
have been developed by the Joint
Commission, an organization that
inspects and accredits health care
organizations across the country.
Effective Care:
Use of Reliever Medication
Effective Care:
Use of Systemic Corticosteroid

National NICU Measures
Rockford Memorial Hospital
takes part in a neonatal intensive care
network called Vermont Oxford Network
(VON). There are over 850 NICUs in the
VON network. We all collect the same
type of data and report that data to
VON. We are able to compare how we are
doing and make improvements on the care
we provide.
